About Melissa Boughey

Since completing her BA Fine Art (Curtin Uni 1994), Melissa Boughey has lived and worked on a rural property near Denmark in the far south of Western Australia that she and her husband bought 20 years ago.

To their 105 acres they have now added a vineyard, cellar door, myriad outhouses including gallery/studio space and a cubby for their 3 boys and many acres of revegetated bushlands - increasing birdlife and native habitat. Living in such a scenic part of the country, surrounded by paddocks, bushlands, watercourses & close to the coast, has given Melissa the visual stimulus to create her work. With their property bordering the Kent River and with a tributary flowing into wetlands right on their doorstep, full of breeding birdlife - the environmental significance of such a site is apparent and inspiring to her work.

My work is a culmination of what I see, being in this landscape, walking it, driving it. Catching glimpses and continuing to condense and abbreviate my experience into the essence of what moves me.

Melissa was shortlisted as a finalist for the prestigious Fleurieu Art Prize. Was awarded a Highly Commended for the Fleurieu Water Prize and in 2014 was shortlisted for the Mandorla Art Award.
